Let’s Talk: Women in leadership

Yesterday, we organised a talk on the theme "Women in Leadership" to highlight young and inspiring female leaders. Our speakers were Oceanne Preaudet, Co-founder of The Party App, Benazeer Saïdoo, CEO of The Mauritius Africa Fintech Hub, and Emmanuelle Therèse Pamma, Founder and Director of Honeyblue Marketing Agency. The talk focused on their professional journeys at the helm of tech or tech-related businesses, to echo the International Women's Day theme as per UN.
An interesting point raised by the speakers was the disparity between men and women in the digital sector. Although women are present in fields supporting the digital revolution, there are few women involved in the more technical fields of the digital economy.

According to a study by Girls Who Code, only 24% of computing jobs in the United States are held by women. In addition, women make up just 19% of computer science graduates in the US. The numbers are even lower for women of colour: Black women make up just 3% of the computing workforce.

In the UK, a study by PwC found that only 15% of employees working in STEM roles are women. This is despite the fact that women make up nearly half of the UK workforce.
These figures show a significant gender disparity in coding and other digital technical fields, where women are underrepresented.

Increasing the representation of women in coding can help address the gender pay gap and provide more career opportunities for women. It is important to ensure that the benefits of the digital revolution are available to everyone, regardless of gender, and including women in the industry helps achieve this goal.

We are very happy to have hosted such an event and grateful to our speakers for their participation. We hope this event has inspired other women to pursue careers in digital and beyond. We hope to bring more events like this in the future, so stay tuned.
